Yes, rightly heard, you can make a miracle yourself!
You don’t need to be super power to do this.
As per United Nations, Nigeria loses 3% of its economy due to road accidents that is including your life, your property, other lives and property. It’s amounting to approx. 12 billion dollars. As per 2016 Sensex we have 186million populations. So per person loss per year is 64.5 dollars.
Globally, every year 1.25 million people are killed as a result of road traffic crashes. 50 million people suffer fatal injuries, with many incurring permanent disabilities.
In 2016 only, on the road of Nigeria 65,467 people affected due to accident. Total Injury were 35,158 and total death 5053 while 2,638 people were handicapped as per FRSC report.
Why so much of fatality does happens!
In Europe fatality rate per 100,000 is only 9.3 while in Africa it is 26.6, highest in the world.
What does European does, African does not?
Nigeria male fatality in an accident is 75% which somehow the victim is only bread and butter for the family while death of children and women gives lifetime pain to the family.
When a person is killed or handicapped, it does not affect only to the victim but the complete family. Being only bread and butter in the maximum case, it affects minimum 3-4 members for each victim.
A rough calculation is given below:
|Total Death in accident||:||5,053|
|Total Fatal injuries in accident||:||2,638|
|Total Victim due to accident||:||7,691|
|Adult male victim 75%||:||5,768|
|Assuming 4 members in a family||:||23,073|
|Add Back Fatal Injury 75%||:||1,979|
|Total Actual Victim||:||25,052|
It means 25,052 populations are forced to live a painful life!
MottoCare.com team interacted with some of the victim’s family and their stories are like;
After death of head of the family on road, they had very difficulties to find livelihood, kids were out of school and had no food even sometime. Being woman, they had to seek help from relatives, sometime they get some time not. Life continues like that.
Is this not forced situation imposed on an innocent people?
Is there any way to prevent or reduce or stop completely such situation?
MottoCare.com team investigated with some drivers, victim’s family about how the tragedy happens;
A plumber whose mother together with other passengers got involved into a serious accident and most of them did not survived.
MottoCare.com team asked a man plumber by profession, how this happened?
He got angry and started abusing driver. Said, He was too greedy. He overloaded his tiny car filling passengers in his boot too. He was overspending even his car was not in a good condition, it was shaking already. Driver too did not survive though.
In most of the cases passengers does not have choice. Sometime due to urgency sometime no option, they board the transport which is not in the condition to carry the passengers they carry actually.
Not all driver or vehicles are in these situations but we can say there are some.
Over speeding causes most of the fatal accidents.
World Bank data indicates; if we cut overall speed by 5%, it reduces fatal accidents by 30%
An illustration for speed management is given below to avoid collision:
|20mph (32km/h)||6m||6m||= 12 meters ( 40feet or 3 car lengths)|
|30mph (48km/h)||9m||14m||= 23 meters ( 75 feet or 6 car lengths)|
|40mph (64km/h)||12m||24m||= 36 meters ( 118 feet or 9 car lengths)|
|50mph (80km/h)||15m||38m||= 53 meters ( 175 feet or 13 car lengths)|
|60mph (96km/h)||18m||55m||= 73 meters ( 240 feet or 18 car lengths)|
|70mph (112km/h)||21m||75m||= 96 meters ( 314 feet or 24 car lengths)|
|Average car Length = 4Meters (13 Feet)|
And this is not the thing with only those who do not have options!
MottoCare.com team did some research on private cars, and found many of them does not wear seat belt. Our may educated citizen does not feel comfortable wearing seat belt while seated front. When they sit at back, forget about seat belt, they don’t care about it.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say;
“Among drivers and front seat passengers, seat belts reduce the risk of death by 45%, and cut the risk of serious injury by 50%. Seat Belts prevent drivers and passengers from being ejected during a crash… seat belts save thousands of lives each year, and increasing use would save thousands.”
FRSC found approx. 6,700 seat belt offences in only 2016.
The common mistakes which can be easily prevented are;
- Over speeding: Follow the speed limit; avoid unnecessary speeding in city and on highway.
- Distracting Driving: Avoid phone calls, eating, drinking, concentrate on driving, avoid fiddling with the music system etc.
- Influence of Alcohol: Influence of alcohol or drugs while driving is very dangerous.
- Reckless Driving: Follow your lane, use traffic indicator, and follow the traffic signals, Overtake carefully.
- Overlooking Road Conditions: Drive as per road conditions and weather conditions.
- Seat belt/ Helmet: Not wearing seat belt/helmet and safety uniform can be dangerous. Follow pedestrian first rule.
- Not maintaining the vehicle: Maintain the vehicle very well. Specially essential parts like; indicators, breaks, horn, tire, wiper, do service on time, lights and reflectors etc
The United Nations is committed to reduce accidents by 50% till 2020 and runs various campaigns to accomplish it.
